Structural Strengthening

Structural Strengthening

Seismic performance analysis and engineering-based structural strengthening for earthquake safety.

The İzmir earthquake of 30 October 2020 showed once again how important the seismic safety of the existing building stock is. With our structural strengthening service we bring buildings found to be at risk up to the performance level defined in the current earthquake code, without demolition.

Process

  1. Preliminary review: The building's design, year of construction and current condition are examined.
  2. Seismic performance analysis: Concrete core samples and reinforcement detection are carried out; the structure is modelled according to the Turkish Building Earthquake Code and its performance level determined.
  3. Strengthening design: Our civil engineers design the most suitable and economical strengthening method based on the analysis; the design is approved by the relevant municipality.
  4. Execution: Strengthening works are carried out under building inspection supervision. In most cases residents do not need to vacate the building.
  5. Inspection and hand-over: Works are inspected, reported and the building handed over.

Methods we apply

  • Reinforced concrete jacketing (column and beam enlargement)
  • Addition of new reinforced concrete shear walls
  • Carbon fibre (CFRP) wrapping and strips
  • Strengthening with steel elements
  • Foundation strengthening and ground improvement

To find out how safe your building is, request a preliminary review. We also provide consultancy for risky-building and urban transformation procedures.
